The Pakistani Taliban confirmed that one of its members shot and gravely wounded a 14-year-old schoolgirl who earned attention for speaking out against the group.

Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head and neck when militants fired on her school bus on Tuesday.

RT News reports the bus was about to leave the school grounds in the city of Mingora when a bearded man approached it and asked which one of the girls was Malala, said Rasool Shah, the local police chief.

Another girl pointed to Malala, but the activist denied it was her and the gunmen then shot both of the girls.
Later that day, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the incident in the Swat valley, northwest of the capital Islamabad.

Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told Reuters his group was behind the shooting.  "She was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and she was calling President Obama her idol."
Malala was shot twice — once in the head and once in the neck — but her wounds were not life-threatening, according to Tariq Mohammad, a doctor at the main hospital in Mingora. Security forces have cordoned off the hospital.

Taliban Shoots 14 year old Schoolgirl in the Head
Fourteen-year-old Malala Yousufzai was admired across a battle-scarred region of Pakistan for exposing the Taliban's atrocities and advocating for girls' education in the face of religious extremists. On Tuesday, the Taliban nearly killed her to quiet her message.

Blogging at age 11

In the past, the Taliban has threatened Malala and her family for her activism. When she was only 11 years old, she began writing a blog under a pseudonym for the BBC's Urdu service about life under Taliban occupation. After the Taliban were ejected from the Swat Valley in the summer of 2009, she began speaking out publicly about the militant group and the need for girls' education.

While chairing a session of a children's assembly supported by UNICEF in the valley last year, the then-13-year-old championed a greater role for young people.

Taliban in the region destroyed around 200 schools. Most were girls' institutions, though some prominent boys' schools were struck as well.

At one point, the Taliban said they were halting female education, a move that echoed their militant brethren in neighboring Afghanistan who during their rule barred girls from attending school.
